Kingfishers Music

Kingfishers enjoyed their music lesson all about Mussorgsky’s ‘Night on Bald Mountain’. (Click here to see a live performance of the whole piece:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52iOdAVU4C8) They were asked to imagine what kind of story this instrumental piece of music could be telling, with the only non-musical clue being the title. Children first listened, then they did quick sketches of the story the music suggested, before responding to the music with physical movement. Each group’s performance was different. In the videos here you will see asteroids hitting Earth, a gun fight, a huge monster attacking.

After the lesson, Kingfishers enjoyed their first ukulele lesson, learning the chords C and Am and playing some games. Children who have had lessons with Mr. Bell got the chance to show off their skills.

Year 3 and 4 Gymnastics Trip

Year 3 and 4 teamed up to visit Norwich Gymnastics Club and enjoy the chance to explore the wide range of equipment and to be taught by professional gymnastics coaches. The children split into five groups and got to experience five different areas of the gym: 1. floor, 2. balance beams, 3. high bars, 4. trampoline, 5. vaulting table. All of the areas and the activities led by the Gymnastics Club staff were designed to gradually increase the difficulty level, giving all children a challenge regardless of ability and experience. Children were all very positive about the experience and it was great at the end to hear so many asking if they could join the club. If you would like your child to join Norwich Gymnastics Club, visit their website here: https://www.norwichgymnasticsclub.co.uk/

Here were some of the children’s comments overheard:

“I am definitely signing up for gymnastics!”

“That was so scary but I’m proud of myself for doing it.”

“You have to be seriously strong to do gymnastics.”

“When are we coming back here?”

Science – parts of the flower

Kingfishers have continued to learn about the parts of a plant and why they need them, this week they have been learning about the flower.

They worked together to build the parts of a flower out of play doh, labelled each part and then explained what each part did.

Greek Myths

Over the last term Kingfisher class have been learning about many Greek Myths. All the pupils in Kingfisher class have written the story of Theseus and Minotaur. They have all spent time editing and improving their work. Finally they published their stories in a book, which they shared with Coots, Bitterns and Grebes. Well done, Kingfisher class. Everyone enjoyed your stories.

Using different types of nouns

Today we began to look at this book which explores the idea of fear.

Kingfishers collected synonyms for fear and talked about their own fears.

They learnt about types of nouns; abstract, common, collective and proper.

They used all these to experiment with constructing sentences to describe their fears.

Exploring the properties of rocks

We have been carrying out investigations and recording our findings. We have been exploring the properties of different rocks, considering: durability, density, texture, appearance and whether they are permeable or impermeable.

We are learning that it is important to know the properties of rocks when considering what they can be used for.

We have included measuring, predicting and explaining our findings.

Kingfisher Coding

We have learnt so much in our computing lessons this term!

Now we are creating sequences so that we can make the rocket follow a pathway.

We have learnt how to create backgrounds and add images. We can create programs where objects move, change direction, pause and disappear either as a result of a click on the mouse or pressing a particular key on the keyboard.

Next, we will be applying these skills using different programs and in different contexts.

Spelling

This week in spelling, we have been learning what a prefix is. We have looked at the prefix ‘re’ and how it changes the meaning of the word.

Throughout the term, we have been developing strategies to help spell words. Today we played a game where we had to work out what word was on our hat and then write it down using the correct spelling.

It was a challenging way to learn the meanings of new words and spell them.

We had fun though!

Computing

This term in Kingfishers we are learning what coding is. We are building up games which require us to move items around the screen, change direction and disappear. In order to do this, we need to create a code that causes something to happen when an item is clicked on or a button is pressed.

Once we are successful, we can create different backgrounds and add other images.

When we are not successful, we need to look back at the codes we have created and see why it does not work.
